The North’s All-Star Shops: Virile Barber and Shop

Waldwick, N.J.; 2 Frederick St.; (201) 444-4565

Vibe: This barbershop operates on vintage. Clients enjoy cuts in a 1901 Koken barber chair, a whimsical tiled floor, and a gallery of antiques, including a 1927 National Cash Register. The place is elegant and edgy (think stylists in ties, white dress shirts and vests with sleeve tattoos).

Barber Shoutout: Owner Adam Ramos comes from a long line of stylists and barbers (his mom was a barber) and started his training for the profession at the age of 10, when he began washing hair at a salon.

Clientele: Everything from corporate execs to fashionistas to rocker rebels.

Extras: Clients can enjoy a complimentary cigar, craft beer, or cognac. The shop also focuses on skin just as much as hair and features a vapor shave, which is a simultaneous facial and shave, and and the legendary 48-step hot-towel shave.

Prices: Haircuts from the master barber cost $40; from a barber, $30; hot-towel shave from the master barber, $50, and from the  barber, $40. The double blade cut is $90 from the master barber and $70 from the regular barber. A father-and-son cut costs $65 from the master barber and $50 from the barber. A haircut and a shave combination costs $65.

Social Media Says: “If you are looking to spoil yourself a bit and end up looking better than when you walked in, you gotta try Virile.”
